Is online piracy a victim-less crime?

I used to be against piracy but my friend convinced me that it's not bad as such since it's a victim less crime.

His analogy was that if you steal an apple, the grocer no longer has an apple to sell and so has made a loss but if you pirate an album, the artist hasn't "lost an album" so it makes no difference to them.

They only make a loss if you would've bought the album were piracy not an option but personally at least, I wouldn't of, I'd of listened on youtube with an adblocker on.

Is this argument legitimate or have I missed something?

Online piracy is not a victimless crime. The victims are the creators and publishers that have made an investment in the creative work, only to have it distributed by people who have no right to do so. This costs them money because people like your friend don't pay for access to the work, which is just stealing (no matter what your friend says).

There is NO SUCH THING as a victimless crime.

That argument isn't even LOUSY. The only thing you missed is the ENTIRE CONCEPT of intellectual property.

The owner has lost a sale ... The one where you would have bought the song or video. The owner has also lost the sales of all the people who are encouraged to pirate the song because they saw / heard about you getting away with it.

    Of course it's not victimless.

It's why you can be sued for $250,000.00. You feel entitled to stealing someone's creation. They feel entitled to suing you and they would win.
