Do all people who have ssi need a payee?

Hello, I and a family member of mine a in a sticky situation. nothing crazy or serious, just VERY confusing. My Sister is completely able to care for her own finances, I am her payee but we both know that I do not need to be. she needs her ssi and medicated very much due to her physical disability. anyway she no longer needs me as a payee??

Then why did you file to be one?  And why didn't she protest it?

A doctor has stated that she is incapable of managing her benefits in her own best interests.  And to answer your question - no - most people who get disability benefits do not have payees.  If you disagree then you and she need to visit your SS office to discuss this.  If that is the case then they will take a claim from her to be made her own payee.  Nothing "sticky" about it.  They will need a statement from her physician that she is competent.  They will obtain statements from you and her.  It is possible that they will contact others.

In the meantime, manage her money like you are supposed to as her payee which means you are responsible for paying her bills and giving her a small allowance.

Find out if her doctor supports her inability to need a payee. Than you tell SSA she no longer needs a payee. They will ask the opinion of her doctor. They will ask her. They will ask you. Than they will come to a decision.
