What does "obtain a gauge" mean in knitting?

    A knitting pattern will tell what gauge is required for the pattern. You need a certain number of stitches in 4 inches and a certain number of rows in 4 inches. You need to change needle sizes until you get the correct gauge for the pattern to work out. More info here: http://sheepandstitch.com/what-is-knitting-gauge/

    The gauge is the size of your needle. If you have a pattern, they'll typically suggest a certain sized needle, and it's called the gauge.
