Is it safe to fly with low iron levels (8, to be precise)?

I recently went to the doctors and discovered through a blood test that my iron levels are low, at 8. I've got some good advice on how to get my levels up and know more about it, but now I'm worrying a little because in about three weeks, I'm flying to Australia, and it's not just a flight there and back, but several flights, because I'm also going to New Zealand. I'm just wondering if it's safe to fly with low iron levels. There were a lot of things I forgot to ask my doctor the other day, and I'm really annoyed at myself now. They want me to start taking iron supplements for the next six months and then review it. Am I safe to fly? I don't want to get ill. I just want to check.

Update:

When I say iron level 8, I'm not sure if it's my ferritin or haemoglobin. I think it's the ferritin, because my doctor was talking about the average range being 12-300.

Why don't you ask your doctor?

    Flying is fine.

Traveling in 3 weeks is probably perfect. Your iron should be up by then. (Just maybe not stabilized) and you should have figured out any sort of supplement side effects by then.

When your iron levels are low, you must have low energy. It may become very tiresome for you to fly for long hours. Call your doctor and talk over the phone for advise. Don't feel bad about doing this. It is your health and safety . You could ask if you can get some iron injections which will work quicker.

Of course it is safe. Flying cannot affect your blood.

Keep taking the pills. They will make your poo black.
