What do you think of this way of approaching?
At my uni there are tons of hot girls and some of them sit by themselves during lectures. If I sat down beside them and jokingly told them to put their numbers in my phone, would I get a positive response?

No you would not. They might even get up and move away from you.
Men fall in love with women who attract the, but women are attracted to men they HAVE fallen in love with.
Don't go thinking you are attractive to them WITHOUT them getting to know you and liking the interaction between the two of them.
TALK to them before lecture. You two have the course in common .. the prof, the material, the assignments, etc. And you can talk about your majors and plans for the future. There is no LACK of things to open conversations.
But before/after lectures will be SHORT conversations.
So, if after 3-7 lectures, chatting before/after, if she seems happy to see you .. ask her if she wants to go for coffee after the lecture. If she has another class but seems sorry about it, ask her out on a date.
But you simply CANNOT go up to a woman and assume she finds you appealing.
If you are gay and going after a guy, this approach might work. But women are NOT men. We don't want the same things, and we don't react in the same way.
