Is it normal to hear my neighboring house’s water usage?

Whenever my neighbor runs a faucet or washing machine I can hear the same rushing noises you would hear as if it was in my own house. When I’m close to the incoming line I can even hear the sounds of a washing machine churning away. I assume this is due to the sound vibrating down the line to the shared main and back up my line. But since it’s not something I recall hearing in outer houses, I want to make sure, is that normal? Home background-1950s(same with neighborhood), copper pipes, in Cedar Rapids, IA.

might be worth digging up the incoming line just to check. might well be that neighboring house has been using your house's water for 30 years ...

[added later] another way to check is when you hear the water running, quickly go turn off the water at your meter. if that stops the sound, your neighbor is likely using your water

It might be normal. Have you asked your neighbour if she hears your water usage also. If she does not then it might need investigating but if she does it is normal because of the way the houses have been built. You could both consider having your houses sound proofed but it's not cheap. There is no point in one doing it if the other won't.

If you live in a duplex or a townhouse that does not have a firewall (a concrete or cinderblock wall top to bottom to prevent the spread of fire) between houses, you could be hearing a lot of noise from your neighbor. Old houses often don't have firewalls, and it's not practical to retrofit one. Laws vary according to where you live and when the house was built.

I live in an old townhouse with shared walls on both sides. Fortunately, we do have firewalls, and the cinder blocks can be seen in both the basement and attic. The only noises we hear from neighbors are very loud noises such as a dog barking or a power drill. I suggest you talk to a couple of contractors about ways to insulate shared walls from noises.
