How can I change my MOS in the Illinois National Guard. I’ve been in for 2 years, and I’m infantry right now.?

First of all, the guard and reserves are not going to create a job for you. The jobs you can do in the guard are limited to what they have open, and what is available at your location. You said you were infantry. let's say you are with a unit based in Peoria,Illinois...but you want to be a combat medic. if your unit does not have a slot on their manning document for a combat medic - then you can't train to be a combat medic because they are not authorized to have one. you'd have to find another unit somewhere else in the state that HAS an opening for a combat medic, or look at the Iowa Guard, Indiana guard, and request a conditional release (or wait until your time is up) to transfer to them and then apply for retraining..

a word to the wise here: since you have already been through an MOS school and are considered 'prior service' to even the guard, if you want to retrain into something else, those costs are going to come out of the gaining unit's funds (versus if you were brand new and off the street with no prior experience, the federal government picks up those costs). I've known more than one person in the guard who found a slot they wanted in another guard unit and wanted to apply for it, but the unit would not approve them for that slot because the cost of the training was expensive and would eat into their budget, and they'd hold that slot for a non-prior for that very reason.

and you've only been in 2 years. i am not so sure your chain of command will approve you for retraining within your unit, because (1) that money as i said comes out of their budget and (2) you really haven't "paid your dues" with them. The longer you've been with them and the more of a 'super star' you have been with them, the greater the chances they will approve you for retraining.

your first step is to talk to your unit's retention officer or recruiter and see what you options are within your current unit, if any. if they have none, then YOU get to do the legwork to find another unit

The GUARD is set up by units in a particular state. Each GUARD unit has a particular function and has people assigned within that unit to do parts of that function. If your GUARD unit is set up as an infantry unit then all you can do is jobs related to that function. They are not going to allow you to transfer out and leave a hole in the unit. That is why the Reserves is better if you want to change jobs. That is set up on a national level and gives you a lot more leeway in changing not only your job but where you live. I suggest you stick it out for the four years you signed up for and then either go into the Reserves or onto Active duty.

Talk to your top or first sergeant to see what openings might be in your unit or battalion. Some might require a change in your MOS and you going off to school to AIT for them while others might just be duty positions where you receive training but yet keep your current MOS. Your commander and unit may support you doing this or maybe not but it does not hurt to investigate and ask about this and you won't know what your options are or if they will support you in this until you talk to them.
