What is the best way to spend less on a vacation to South Korea?

Simply practicing frugality as you usually would will get you far. I would also suggest going to places outside of Seoul, as you will find that to be the most expensive place to be. Basically everyone I ve talked to says that Busan is better than Seoul. I ve had friends who traveled to various countryside areas as well as Jeju. (And keep in mind, they are college students, who are usually always broke.) They would split air bnbs for not too bad of a price. There are also LOTS of Korean families who rent out rooms, like a homestay. The prices are not bad (some being around $30 a night or less) and many also offer other services like tour guides and traditional meals. If you just google homestay in korea, plenty of sites will pop up. Also if you plan to go to Jeju, it s better to have at least 4 days there (you ll spend a lot of time driving or waiting for a bus/taxi).

Find a Korean friend here before you go. Let that friend intrude you to another friend in Korea. Koreans are usually very loyal to their friends. Be up front about your point of stretching your money as far as possible. They will know what to do and where to go without missing much.

Go to N Korea once there. Prices are much lower. Little to buy there.

Stay with someone you know. If you can't do that, stay in a 찜질방 or do temple-stays.

Eat at 김밥천국 or 김밥나라, eat street food like 떡볶이 or 삼각 from a 편의점.

Take the bus/subway to get around.

Book your flight well in advance, if need be book a flight with multiple layovers.

Use cash when purchasing some types of items as many places will give small discounts.

Stick to doing things that are free or extremely cheap.

It's not very difficult. You can be frugal here in many of the same ways it can be done elsewhere.
