Work question?

A 7.00 ✕ 105 kg subway train is brought to a stop from a speed of 0.500 m/s in 0.400 m by a large spring bumper at the end of its track. What is the force constant k of the spring (in N/m)?

    The work that is done by the spring is equal to the initial kinetic energy of the train.

    KE = ½ * 7.00 * 10^5 * 0.500^2 = 8.75 * 10^4 J

    Work = ½ * k * 0.400^2 = k * 0.008

    k * 0.008 = 8.75 * 10^4

    k = 8.75 * 10^4 ÷ 0.008 = 1.09375 * 10^7 N/m

    I hope this is helpful for you.
