Change your filter. Pull any area rugs away from return vents if they are on the floor. You are possibly starving a furnace for return air. You could also have supply vents blocked off. Either of these can cause the furnace to overheat quickly, tripping a safety limit switch.

Heater?? Do you mean your furnace? Clean all return vents. Change out the furnace filter. Still happening, call for repairs.

seems the thermostat isn't working properly, or, perhaps, the heater draws "too much" energy and there's a safety cutoff that turns it off.
btw, what kind of 'heater' is it? electric? gas? fuel oil? other?
