How to get a job in another state?

There are a couple places in New York I really want to work for but because I live in New Jersey they want nothing to do with me. They are worried the commute would hinder my availability and they don't want to risk it. What can I do?

That makes zero sense. Many do exactly that. You could move.

Don't tell them where you live. It is illegal for them to as.

They do have ways of figuring out this information otherwise though with side questions. If they don't want to hire you simply because you live in a certain place, then that can be illegal. If they require you to be available within a certain amount of time if asked and the distance prohibits that, then they are making the correct business decision. There question should be "how long would it take you to get to work if asked to do so expectantly?"

So what can you do? If they ask where you live, you kindly say that's not a legal interview question, however then immediately tell them how long your commute would be.

Half the workforce in NYC lives in CT, NJ or Long Island and faces the same commutes. This is an excuse not a reason.
