Do people feel better talking to a person online and in person?

I find it easier to say what I really think online, whereas if I'm actually face to face with a woman, I can barely even work up the courage to talk to her at all, if we haven't already met. That's why I tried online dating. I talked to thousands of women, or messaged that many, and it was only dozens of them I actually met in real life. maybe a half dozen I managed to have some sort of intimacy with, and one or two, might have led to some sort of relationship, if it weren't for the fact that either me, or them, were kind of messed up. I've just started again to try to use the internet dating sites, even though I basically thought I had given up on women for good. I'm in my mid thirties, something about the whole thing is just so depressing and futile.
