How do you buy the correct size hockey pants? Above the knee, just at the knee are they supposed to be lose fitting?

Size-wise, you go off of your waist size (if you have a 38 inch waist, buy pants to fit a 38 inch waist). You may need to go up a size depending on fit. For skaters, pants should ensure there's no open space between the bottom of the pants and the top of the shin-guards (ideally you try them on with your shin guards to ensure you don't have a gap at the thigh- block a shot without protection or take a slash and you'll see the issue). At the waist they should sit at your natural waist (your navel) so that the hip padding protects your hips. Ideally there's an overlap. As far as fit, it's really a personal thing. You need to be able to move in them so they should not be overly snug. Some guys like 'em baggy as heck, others prefer something more tailored.
