What are your thoughts and opinions on counseling and psychotherapy?

Ie... seeing a therapist.

Is it just a money trap or is it worth it for those who are stressed out and looking for help?

You gotta do what you gotta do to get right.

For some psychiatric conditions, they are the ONLY THING that will work.

The purpose of counseling and therapy is to help the patient EXPRESS their human needs and explore ways to control unwanted behavior and learn new life skills in order to become able to function. No pill can do this. Therapy is hard work and it doesn't matter if you need physical therapy to recover from a severe injury or psychotherapy to become functional.

No one can sprinkle you with pixie dust and make it all better. It's just hard work that takes time.

It is good as long as you have the right one.

Just see how they treat you.

It can be helpful in helping people find out what the source of their issues is. What it will NOT do is fix people. That's all on you. Once you discover what it is that is causing your problems, it is up to you to do the work to change. A counsellor or therapist cannot fix that for you.

Honestly I felt it was a waste of my money, I went the private route which cost me £150 per session with a psychiatrist who assessed me for 20-40 minutes and was little or no help, I went to another guy who was recommended to me by a friend he was £70 a week for an hour.

This went in long enough for me to be able to say if this was private I can only imagine what the public mental health services are like. Having said all that something had to be done or I would have taken my life, I'm luckily didn't. It was rough but I'm glad it happened so I can advise you.

Try getting regular sleep 8 hours a night, a healthy balanced diet and plenty of water, daily exercise like running. I guarantee you those 3 things cause the most mental health issues, I gave up alcohol temperarally and I believe that helped, I kept a diary so I could read what was causing me to be sad (I got lonely easily), some people say cbt and meditation work but I could never meditate and I found cbt too basic and boring.
