What's it like being a car lot porter?

When I was in the trade we had a kid (son of the Sales Manager) who was a functional illiterate. You could give him the most complicated verbal instructions, he could follow it. Give a note with minimal instructions and he was fogged.

He started as Lot Boy, moved to Detailer, then Service Advisor. and Salesman. Finally when his father was promoted to Facility Manager, he was also promoted to Sales manager.

Lot Porter? I presume is what we called a "lot boy", moving cars around, spotting delivery autos, Inspecting new cars into stock, errands of all sorts. Car Swaps, Parts runs, Stocking, Registration runs, and anything else a manager wants/needs performed.

Pay is minimum, raises at the pleasure of the owner/dealer.

Knowledge, how to drive the vehicles, manual and automatic. Most is on the job training.

As most jobs in the World, education at 5th grade level is all that is needed, Basic Math, English reading & writing.

You'll make min wage and be everyone's *****. Also everyone will think you're mentally slow.

one way you can find out this information is apply for the job. during the interview process, all of these questions are appropriate to ask. especially for those new in the industry. just because you apply doesn't mean you'll get an interview. just because you get an interview doesn't mean youll get an offer. just because you get an offer, doesn't mean you're forced to accept it. though, if you get that far, and you're still on the fence, you're just wasting everyone's time.
