I need help with this AP English question :)?

Andrew Scull lambasted capitalism strongly in his influential Museums of Madness: The Social Organization of Insanity in Nineteenth-Century England (London: Allen Lane, 1979), pp. 30-31, then returned to gnaw in passing at this bone again in The Most Solitary of Afflictions: Madness and Society in Britain, 1700-1900 (New Haven, Yale U. Press, 1993), a book that is essentially an extensively revised second edition of Museums, see pp. 106, 125.

Which statement is true according to the footnote?

A. An article entitled Museums of Madness: The Social Organization of Insanity in Nineteenth-Century England is one of the sources referenced by the author

B. Andrew Scull wrote two articles about madness in nineteenth-century England

C. The Most Solitary of Affictions: Madness and Society in Britain, 1700-1900 was published in 1993.

D. Museums of Madness: The Social Organization of Insanity in Nineteenth-Century England was published by a company called London in 1979

E. The Most Solitary of Afflictions: Madness and Society in Britain, 1700-1900 was published to counter the arguments in Scull's previous book

    D. is plainly false since London is the name of the city where it was apparently published, not the name of the publisher. E. is false C. is false; the actual publication date was 1979. A. is false ... there is no evidence presented that author Scull referenced his own work. Apparently, you are to answer B.

Btw, Scull's screeds are nonsense. You'll find a fine refutation in Harvard Professor Pipes' volume "Property and Freedom" [If I recall correctly, it was published by MIT Press about 1973.]

Since the question specifically asks about the footnote, not the entire passage, and only one answer can be correct. I would point you toward C. You have to do your own thinking on this based on what your teacher has told you.

    A. The article is referred to in the text, but not in the footnote.

    B. While this statement is true, it isn't part of the footnote.

    C. The date of publication for this article is in the footnote and is 19993.

    D. London is the location of the publication, not the publisher.

    E. Footnotes just document they don't make arguments.

    C. is right. Scull's second book, The Most Solitary of Afflictions: Madness and Society in Britain, 1700-1900, was published in 1993.

I love the metaphor of gnawing at the bone again. 8^)
