    Yes. You have used 'than' correctly. (It means something will be compared to something else). Just put a , (comma) there instead of the ; (semi-colon). Better...

    "... different FROM" is the usual phrase.

    Drop the superfluous part of the sentence after the semicolon. "It sounded different than I had intended" works just fine.
