Can my boss fire me because I asked why the new girls get more shifts than I do?

I have worked in a waitressing job for almost a year and a half. My boss just hired three new girls, and they routinely get three or four shifts a week, while I will only get one. I expressed my frustration to my boss over this. Could she fire me?

They can fire you for any reason at all, or for no reason.

Have you worked only (1) shift since they hired you a year and a half ago? When you started, did you ask to work only certain hours?

If you have been working only 1 shift from the beginning, then at some point (before now) should have talked to your boss and asked for more shifts when you knew you were able to do so.

As long as it was a mature, unheated conversation expressing your concern about your hours then why would she fire you? Personally, I would've left any mention of the new girls out of it though. It comes across as unprofessional.

You never know someone else's situation. Maybe the new workers have more experience than you or are better workers? A lot of times in these types of shift jobs the managers will give the better workers more hours and the workers who don't turn out quality work will get fewer hours. Focus on improving yourself and the quality of your own work rather than focusing on the new girls so much.

You stated you've been there for a year and a half. What tends to happen is, when people are at a job for a long time, they tend to settle in to a routine and become complacent and apathetic. You always gotta be looking for that motivation to stay on top of your game or look for a new job where the responsibilities aren't so mundane and will keep things exciting.

An employer has ALL the power and can fire an employee for any reason or no reason unless they're in a union. That's why workers should support unions.

Depends on if your contract is at will employee or not. Regardless, sounds like u need another job. A waitress job is a dime a dozen now

If she does you could get unemployment checks. Because that's not a valid reason to fire somebody no.

Your boss has a right to fire an employee for whatever reason they want but to fire you over that would be stupid on their part. If they do fire you then it’s their loss. You’re expressing your concern as to why you don’t have a lot of hours compared to the new employees so your boss should understand that you want more hours and that your upset that you’ve been there longer and you got less hours than them.
