I don't think so. It just makes you feel wretched. Complications from aerophagia can though.

Short answer is yes - BUT - it takes a long time!
It is not a serious condition generally and there are cures available.
Long term problems can result in reflux which can then lead to Barrat's oesophagus which in turn can lead to cancer of the throat or oesophagus.
