Majoring in art then minor in business? Or the other way around?

I am really conflicted of what to major in and minor in. I have a mind set of being a graphic designer career-wise but I am unsure of what to declare.

Either way. There are not a lot of jobs in art or design, but there are some. Business will be useful no matter what.

For graphic design, forget art and forget business. You need a graphic design degree. Due to the glut on the market, you'd better be really good at graphic design & promoting yourself & your work since the vast majority of graphic designers are self-employed.

If you want to be a graphic designer, major in graphic design. If you think that at some point you might want to own and run your own graphic design company, then it wouldn't hurt to take a few business classes. You don't have to minor in business but you can. If you want to be a graphic designer in a marketing department, you would benefit from taking a few marketing classes so you understand what your clients are trying to achieve.

I know it is scary to put that stake in the ground, but everyone needs to select a path and start walking down it. A generic business degree isn't a lot of help in finding a job. Business majors really tend to fall into a few categories. They are either accountants, or into marketing, finance, or things like real estate.

Go for a major that will produce a good paying job otherwise skip college altogether. It's not worth going into debt for something that you don't need a degree for. Look at all the great graphic designers out there. Did they go to college for that? Otherwise, you'd be best served doing your hustle right away. It is a tough racket to make a living off of so you better have a back up plan as well.
