2 inches is 3 miles
so 6 inches is ? miles.
2 inches x 3 = 6 inches
so multiply the 3 miles by 3 as well.
9 miles

The map scale is 2 inches --> 3 miles
Now you are asked what 6 inches represents. That's *3* times as long on the map, so will be *3* times as long in real life.
6 inches --> 9 miles
It's intuitive and you don't even have to get into thinking about proportions and ratios, etc.
If you want to do it in a more formal, mathematical way:
2/3 = 6/x
Cross multiply:
2x = 18
x = 18/2
x = 9
Answer:
9 miles

you had better leave the planning to someone else.
3 mi/2 in = x mi/6 in
x = 6(3/2) = 9 mi

2 inches to 3 miles can be set up as a ratio:
2/3
We know the map shows 6 inches with an unknown number of miles, so another ratio:
6/x
The ratios should be the same for all measurements, so we can set them equal and solve for the unknown:
2/3 = 6/x
2x = 18
x = 9 miles
