Depends on your budget.
In a perfect world where money is no object, get a brand new one every 4 years.
The rest of us realize that is a waste.
If you only have $5000 to spend, you are going to get high mileage.

Average number of miles per year in the USA is 13,500. So take that and multiply it times the age of the vehicle. Let say it is a 2009, That makes it ten years old so 135,000 miles would be normal. If it is over that then it was driven more than average, less than that, less than average. You want to be at that number or less unless they are really cutting the price.

I've seen SUV's with less than 100K on them that have 'too many miles' because they were driven hard and poorly maintained.

It depends on how gently a vehicle has been treated and how well it has been maintained. My Toyota 4Runner has over 300,000 miles on it. That's considered way too many miles by most people, but then I have maintained it in top condition and fully expect to get at least 200,000 more. There are low miles SUV's that have been severely abused and not well maintained that I wouldn't touch unless they were free. Since most people don't drive or maintain their vehicles as well as they should, I'd say that if you lack maintenance knowledge and skills you shouldn't consider anything that is out of warranty unless you can verify the maintenance history and have a qualified shop go over it thoroughly before buying it. Otherwise, it's a gamble if you don't do your homework on it.

That depends on how well it's been maintained and your personal budget. Personally, I draw the line at 100,000.
