Why do Thai people have to bow LOWER than the King ? (I thought King Chulalongkorn abolished it 100+ years ago) ?

In the story 'The King & I' (Anna & the King), King Chulalongkorn is the 'son' who made Thailand more westernised.

He abolished Bowing Low. (over 100 years ago).

But Thai Poeple currently are forced to remain lower posture than the King.

Which Thai King brought it back ?? and Why ??

The practice of public prostrations was never officially reintroduced. Customs like this, which had been around for centuries generally don’t cease just because something else becomes permissible.

The change was more for the benefit and comfort of visiting foreigners when in audience with The King, and also to make alliances with western powers more palatable. It also came with a change in law that made it permissible to touch a member of the Thai royal family, following the accidental drowning of Queen Sunanda Kumariratana and Princess Karnabhorn Bejraratana.

The difference now is that the Thai people CHOOSE to do so out of genuine love and reverence for their monarch.

Under the old law they were FORCED to do so.

Anyone not bowing lower these days might cause offence (probably not to the King though) and upset people, but unless there was genuinely insulting behaviour then there would be no legal penalty.
