Blood sugar higher in the morning then at night?

I'm diabetic. Usually my blood sugar is good but sometimes it's on the high side of normal. My question is that twice this week it was higher in the morning then at night. What causes that?

PS I'm not on insulin just pills

You mention medicine, but no mention of food intake, carbs, or when you took it the night before. It does seem off, but do you medicate at night also?

You should have chosen Nadia's answer as best answer - it is the correct one.

To expand this answer here is a more detailed explanation:

Most diabetics do not understand why they have a high blood sugar level in the morning when they didn’t eat

anything before going to bed. At night, while you are sleeping, the body works very hard to repair itself and uses sugar to do this. Since there was no food eaten before going to bed, the body’s has to cannibalize off itself so the liver will be able to make sugar for energy.

The brain, being the master controller of all body functions, senses that there is not enough sugar in the blood for its own use and commands the liver to dump up to two to three times the amount of sugar in the blood just in case it needs it. This is why the sugar level went up without you eating anything.

It is suggested that if a diabetic were to eat 8-10 ounces of green beans (fresh, frozen or canned) with some salt 15 minutes before going to bed they may find their blood sugar levels much lower in the morning. The green beans are low in carbs and have enough protein, magnesium, and tryptophan to carry the body through the night.

I found this info for you. Perhaps this can help you out.

    * Why is my blood sugar higher in the morning than at night?

Another cause of high morning blood sugar is the "dawn phenomenon.". In the dawn phenomenon, your body releases hormones that trigger your liver to put out glucose while you sleep. If there is not enough insulin in the body to counteract this, then blood glucose levels rise during the night, resulting in a high reading in the morning.
