I tie some polyester thread very tightly to the base of them. Within two days and with a little encouragement they 'die' and fall off.

I don't care what you read, there are no really no "natural" substances that will get rid of them.
I had one, and I simply clipped it with a sterilized nail clipper, applied hydrogen peroxide and then antibiotic ointment. I used the peroxide and the ointment for the next several days. It healed nicely.
You have to be willing to put up with a little bit of pain using this method, but it does work.
