I think he would have been very successful and popular, and not just among the whiny "today's music sucks" crowd, but I don't know whether or not he would have been just as successful.

Yes, he would. He was never an original or an innovator first (the presence of folks like Eno or Fripp on his records brought that to his music), but, a chameleon. It's this chameleon-like nature that would allow him to succeed even now.

No. Record companies purposely pick linear bands because they want consistency even if consistency means consistently mediocre or terrible artists.
Society has proven that they will consume average musicians soon a mass level so it's what record companies push.

No. Nowadays people prefer pop and rap. If Cardi B or Ariana Grande was around in the 70s they would've been laughed at.
