It can be a controversial topic in the bible on what the soul is.
Many christian's of the protestant/ evangelical churches as well as the catholic church teach that the soul is the real person living in our human bodies.
According to this teaching the soul is the seat of our real emotions, feelings, and thoughts which God has installed into every human being.
Furthermore it is believed that the soul in man is immortal which continues to live after our mortal bodies die a natural death.
Does the bible teach that the soul is the real you and that it is immortal?
When God created Adam as the first human being -- we read this:
(Gen 2:7) And the LORD God formed man out of the dust of the ground, and BREATHED into his NOSTRILS the BREATH of LIFE; and man BECAME a LIVING SOUL. (caps mine)
Notice Adam was not created as a living soul -- he became a living soul. This living soul in Adam was called the breath of life which enabled Adam to be alive.
The living soul in man is nothing more than the breath of life which allows us to breath and live !
How are people coming up with this idea that the soul is the real person inside us ?
The soul has got nothing to do with our minds and conscience which is part of our bodies, neither is the living soul inside us immortal.
Jesus clearly stated that God could destroy (out of existence) both the soul and body in *hell* (Matt 10:28)
We also read that between Christ's death and resurrection that he was DEAD (out of existence) in both soul and body for 3 days and 3 nights in *hell* (Matt 12:41 & Acts 2:27-31)
Yes it is true that the soul is also connected with the spirit in man just like it is with the body --- but we have to read the context it written in from the bible when this is mentioned.
Bottom line the soul is the breath of life in man which dies along with the body in the *grave* If you are dead in the grave then you have a dead body and a dead soul both not alive !
Jesus proved through the resurrection from the *grave" that there was LIFE after DEATH.
His death, burial, and resurrection for our sins is the gospel of our salvation (1Cor 15:1-4) If you will believe this then you will have eternal life from the *grave" through the resurrection (John 11:25, 1Cor 15:20-23, Eph 5:14, Phil 3:21 & Tit 1:2)
btw- the subject of the true identity of *hell*in the bible is also a controversial issue.
According to the Hebrew word "sheol" meaning the Grave and the Greek word "hades" meaning the abode of the dead --- our English word "hell" for these two words simply means the Grave NOT a place of eternal conscious torment in fire for the unsaved which many christian's connect that persons "immortal soul" as going to after death.

Is the living force, the living being, the self. The human , animals, even trees and plants are essentially spirit souls. It is the spirit soul which is the background of the development of the material body. Matter is a dead matter. The symptom of the soul is "consciousness". A dead body can be cut into pieces and won't protest, because consciousness is gone. Life can't be created artificially. Scientists can't bring to life a dead body just by injecting chemicals. The soul is the life. Just like a car. The car won't move unless the driver start it. As soon the driver leaves the car, the car is useless. Similarly, the material body moves, acts, feels, etc. because the driver (the soul) is present, as soon the soul leaves de body, the body is useless, must be buried of cremated. We are spirit souls, the soul is the person, we are not material bodies, the body is just a dress for the soul, we dress as Americans, as Chinese, as Russians, as Mexicans, etc. but the soul is the same. We are not Americans, we are not Chinese, we are not Russians, we are not Christians, we are not Muslins, we are Jews, these are external designations, we are spirit souls eternal servants of Krishna, God.

Often the soul is equated with the total person. For instance, Genesis 2:7 tates: “God proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul.” The first man, Adam, was a soul.
The understanding that the word soul can mean the whole person is supported by other scriptures. For example, the Bible speaks of a soul’s doing work. Leviticus 23:30 The soul is spoken of as being impatient, irritated, sleepless, fearful, and depressed. Judges 16:16
Referring to a soul as a person, Romans 13:1 states: Let every soul be in subjection to the superior authorities.” And at 1 Peter 3:20, we read: “In Noah’s days, a few people, that is, eight souls, were carried safely through the water.”
Nothing in these scriptures indicates that the soul is some immaterial entity that lives on after death.
Therefore, all living creatures are souls.

Time is the summation of the three dimensions, up down, left right, back forward. When you say I'll see you at three o'clock tomorrow, you're saying I'll see you when the earth is in this position.
The 'soul" is similarly shorthand for the sum of experience, genetics, culture etc. It's not a thing in itself. You are an organic machine.

Human beings have a dual nature - biological and spiritual. Our body is the essence of our biological nature. Our soul is the essence of our spiritual nature.

Soul is the mind, will and emotions.
The sum being of your experiences and learning
Your Spirit is the essence of who you are.
When you are saved, your spirit is made new, instantly
But the soul still has to be redeemed (or saved) by changing your ways and thinking

"Soul" or "spirit" comes from the Hebrew "nephesh", and carries a number of meanings, depending upon the context: Nephesh is a Biblical Hebrew word which occurs in the Hebrew Bible. The word refers to the aspects of sentience, and human beings and other animals are both described as having nephesh. Plants, as an example of live organisms, are not referred in the Bible as having nephesh. The term נפש is literally "soul", although it is commonly rendered as "life" in English translations. One view is that nephesh relates to sentient being without the idea of life and that, rather than having a nephesh, a sentient creation of God is a nephesh. In Genesis 2:7 the text is that Adam was not given a nephesh but "became a living nephesh." Nephesh then is better understood as person, seeing that Leviticus 21:11 and Numbers 6:6 speak of a "dead body", which in Hebrew is a nép̄eš mêṯ, a dead nephesh. Nephesh when put with another word can detail aspects related to the concept of nephesh; with רוּחַ rûach it describes a part of mankind that is immaterial, like one's mind, emotions, will, intellect, personality, and conscience, as in Job 7:11.
