What language(s) is Russian derived from? Or what language(s) is derived from Russian?
I m writing a short story where one of the characters is fluent is a language that I haven t decided yet. I know that when you re fluent in certain languages it makes it easier to learn one that it is derived from or vice versa. What language would fit that if she wanted to learn Russian?
Sorry if this made no sense, I tried lmao.

Russian evolved from Old East Slavonic, which died out during the 14th century. Other languages that evolved from Old East Slavonic are Belarussian and Ukrainian.

ukrainian, belorussian, bulgarian, polish, chech, kroatian. those will be it. moldovan is not related to russian, except the word "da"

You tried. Your choice of words is just a little off. You are looking for languages that are 'related' (not 'derived from'). So for Russian, pick any other language that is in Russian's 'family'. Russian's family of languages is called Slavic. So you might look at the "Slavic Language Tree" -- which you'll find lots of on the internet -- and pick the Slavic one that might have an additional reason for the speaker to want to learn Russian. (That makes for a better realistic story.)
