Why does it take the national media so long to report who the shooter in these mass shootings are?

Innocent till proven guilty. This would be a public accusation of a possibly innocent man. It not that important what his name is right away.

It doesn't take longer than a few hours. In some cases the assailant is killed without i.d. he may be illegal with no prints on file.

They need a cofirmation.

He was not a Trump supporter.

The police have more important things to do at the moment. Even so, we often get the name in a few hours.

If the shooter is Muslim, Latino or Black the name is usually released quickly. The white shooters get the "we are in the first stages of an ongoing investigation" treatment. Remember, the white church shooter was even taken to lunch because he was hungry before being booked.
