Religion in many places and times was ONLY MORALITY -- the opposite of what is said here!! Do I have Toynbee wrong?

The equation of religion with belief is rather recent.

    Baloney.

Religion has never done any more than merely codify existing cultural morals, and give them a veneer of being "from god." Morals always have, and always will exist independent of religion. This is because morals are derived not from some fairy tales, but from evolutionary imperitives. As a social species, treating each other, and each other's property with respect is a beneficial, positive thing, while stealing from each other and hurting each other is a corrosive, negative thing. Make up all the stories you want about it, but it's not "god," it's evolution.

I don't know what Toynbee said on the matter, but there have always been elements of belief and tradition in religion, so it was never ONLY morality.

I would say he is wrong, religion with belief has been around since time began.
