    Answer b. chemosynthesis. There are two choices: with light (photo-) or without which involves some chemical process (chemo-). The choice is always photosynthesis or chemosynthesis. If light is involved it is the former and if light is not involved it is the latter.

    Note: Nitrogen fixation is necessary for photosynthetic organisms. It is how they obtain nitrogen to synthesize amino acids and thus make proteins.

    Chemosynthesis. It was discovered that organisms deep in the ocean (where light cannot reach), can convert inorganic compounds to organic ones.
