I asked earlier if I know that c squared equals 49 inches, what are a squared and b squared, & people told me there are infinite answers but?
What if I know that a and b are the same length? Is it solveable then, or are there still lots of different answers possible?

If c^2 = 49 inches, a^2 + b^2 = 7^2
Only answer is 7.5^2 - 3.5^2 = 2x^2 (where x ≈ 4.9497)

You listen to the wrong people. Whatever you square NEVER equals an amount of inches.
The answers given HERE just ASSUME you are talking about a specific triangle, but you failed to specify

Assuming pythagoras' theorem we have that:
a² + b² = c²
i.e. a² + b² = 49
As a = b we have:
a² + a² = 49
i.e. 2a² = 49
=> a² = 49/2
Hence, a = √(49/2) => 7/√2 or 7√2/2

If a = b, then
a^2 + b^2 = 49
a^2 + a^2 = 49
2a^2 = 49
sqrt(2) * a = 7
a = 7 / sqrt(2)
a = 7 * sqrt(2) / 2
a = 7 * 1.414 / 2
a = 7 * 0.707
a = 4.949, roughly.

If you know a and b is to be the same length, then you can make the substitution and solve for that one unknown:
a² + b² = 49
Setting a and b to "x":
x² + x² = 49
2x² = 49
x² = 49/2
x = 7 / √2
x = (7/2)√2 inches
