Why is it people die when their wrists are slit, but if someone’s hand is blown off they can survive?

This one’s been in my head for a while, to me, it just doesn’t make sense.

The answers are not quite correct. People who slit their wrists dont always die. Those that do, often do it in water which keeps clots from occurring, hence more bleeding, as well as try to slit it up the artery. Someone who has a hand blown off may also die, as its still the radial and ulnar arteries, but they generally try and stop the bleeding with pressure etc. But they could also easily die as well.

You can die when your wrists are slit, because: If you slit your wrist (especially if you slit it vertically), you are slashing an artery that runs directly to your heart. You will quickly "bleed out" internally from that slashed artery, unless you receive immediate medical attention.

If your hand is blown off or cut off, your hand doesn't contain arteries, it only contains veins. Many times today (if your hand is cut off), the hand can be re-attached to your arm, after the veins and bones are put back together. You're not in as much danger of "bleeding out" from a hand that is cut off as you would be from a slashed artery. In fact, a hand that's cut off doesn't "bleed" as much as you would expect It would - you're only cutting veins..

maybe cause when you slit your wrists youre cutting into an artery, the arteries are in your wrists and not your hands

People can die if they slit a wrist longitudinally but rarely if slit laterally, which happens when a hand is blown off. This is because the rather blunt end of an artery will seal itself off.

People dont usually die when their wrists are slit unless no one notices it for hrs and too much blood has come out. usually people slit their wrists as a suicide attempt in a heat of the moment situation and someone is around to take them to the hospital before they die from blood loss.

Because if one is slitting their wrists they wouldn't tourniquet their arm like they would if it was blown off perhaps? But for slit wrists to be fatal, they need to be deep, underneath bundles of tendons and ligaments, it's messy and difficult. You would have to be really determined.
