Patience, empathy, the ability to communicate and the willingness to stick through the tough times. But all of this is useless if he hasn't chosen a partner with the same attributes.

In a good marriage, both people are very willing to sacrifice for the sake of the spouse but reluctant to allow the spouse to sacrifice for them. A marriage based on "Everything has to be 50-50; I'm not willing to go more than half way" is headed for trouble.
