What is literary fiction?

What are the elements and or characteristics that build fiction writing?

I'm confused, I need to write an essay explaining it and I honestly can't seem to find a website that explains it to me thoroughly.

There are tons and tons of BOOKS that explain that thoroughly. But you probably have no fcuking idea what a "library" is or how to find books about "how to write fiction," so you're hosed.

While you are awaiting the 'superior answer' from the BlueFace, you may like to think of literary fiction thus:

Literary fiction is usually more concerned with style and characterization than commercial or genre fiction. Literary fiction is usually of a higher intellectual quality which can handle complex themes and issues and pose questions in deeply meaningful ways.

Also within certain genres like Science Fiction, there can be literary sci-fi authors who make a much more professional effort than the 'pulp' writers.
