Spinach is erroneously thought to have a high iron content because the chemist who originally measured it made a mistake and the myth was perpetuated by Popeye's strength being attributed to eating it.

Free stuff for everybody seems to be the modern way. At one time children up to age 18 got free milk when at school. Turns out it had to be paid for by somebody so Harold Wilson stopped it for secondary pupils and Edward Heath ordered it stopped for juniors.
