Why do a lot of English Singers sound like their american/sing with an american accent when they sing?
I've heard the reason is because it forces you to sing the long vowel sounds, but is this really true? Some singers sound like they are american when they sing, Elton John, Adele and George Michael, but others you can clearly hear their english accent when they sing, such as Sting, Peter Gabriel and Rod Stewart.
I wish I could get Sting to sing a George Michael Song like "everything she wants" and see how he sound, if it would force him to sing with an american accent. He did some vocals work in Dire Straits Money for nothing and sounds English next to the lead vocalist Mark Knopfler who is also English.

British singers don't intentionally adopt an American accent when they sing. Instead, their British accent is somewhat neutralized when they sing. Accents in speech is usually defined by rhythm, intonation, vowel quality and vowel length. It is the vowels that carries a singer's voice to the listener, and the elongation of vowels when singing tend to neutralize the British accent that is present in speech.
