Hi John. I added a few comments below, then looked back at the origibnal question ... You're running Win7, whioch means that You have something called "Compatibility mode" from back when it was actually a GOOD thing that MS built.
In Win7, the compatibility modes supported a lot of 16bit stuff from the Win95/98 days, as well as a huge amount of WinXP software.
Take a look here, & keep in mind that Compat mode is pretty much the same as having a VM software already installed & just telling a game to use it when You run that game.

Why?!? If you need XP for a specific piece of software it makes MUCH more sense to install it in a virtual box instead of dual booting.

you want a multi boot bit of software. some hard disk managers can do this; else you look for just the multi-boot software. free versions likely at cnet.com/downloads under utilities [use their search function]. WARNING: this operation may erase the existing partition and/or its ability to boot. READ the instructions carefully.

You could easily look this up on YouTube. You allot how much space you want for the first partition, create it and then go back to create the second partition with the remaining space. When you install an OS, it asks where you want to install it to. Choose one partition for Win 7 and the other for XP. The only thing left is the boot manager so that during boot up it gives you a screen for which OS to boot into. Again it would be easier to look it up on YouTube than me to write a book here on how to do that.
