American Recipe grammar: 'add 1 1/4 teaspoons' ?
in the recipe it says: "add 1 1/4 teaspoons"
Does this mean:
One and a quarter teaspoons?
or,
Quarter of a teaspoon?
Sorry, but I get really confused with American ways of saying fractions.
ie: (one half hour, is this 30 or 90 minutes ??)
is there a reason Americans do not say 'Half an Hour', instead of one half hour ?
Surely this avoids confusion ?

Yes, 1 1/4 is one & a quarter teaspoons (1.25). A quarter teaspoon would be "1/4 tsp".
We do say "half an hour", also "one half hour" or "a half hour". All are 30 minutes. 90 minutes would be "an hour and a half". Or "one and a half hours".

One and a quarter tsp and 30 minutes. If we wanted to indicate a quarter of a tsp, we would write 1/4 tsp and 90 minutes would be an hour and a half.

I read it as one and one quarter. It would save a lot of such ambiguity were the USA to move into the 20th century (I won't hope for the 21st) and call it 7gm.
