Did they have GED classes on U.S. Navy Aircraft Carriers in the 1970s?
I talked to a guy in passing who said he was one of the last people who was able to enlist in the Navy without a high school diploma or a GED back in 1975. He said the only reason he was able to get his GED was that he was stationed on an Aircraft Carrier and they had classes to teach people to pass the GED. When his ship was at sea for six months or more at a time, it was easier to take the classes than if he was shore based. Plus, a lot of sailors that wanted to make the Navy their career were trying to get it because they didn't believe they would be promoted if they didn't.
I was wondering if anyone who served on a carrier in the 1970s have any first hand knowledge of that.

Yes this was true at one point. Not sure of the exact time frame. Even today you can occasionally find college courses being offered.

My father joined the Navy in 1944. He had an 8th grade education. He was one of the fastest sailors to obtain the rank of Masterchief E-9. He was E-9 in 1956. My father got his GED while in the Navy, and graduated from high school in 1967, the same year my older sister graduated. Now you need a college degree to obtain E-9.

He LIED. I don't know it they offered classes. I do know it would NOT have been easier on a ship than in a shore based posting. If anything, the opposite would be more accurate.
