What would I use to stop a metal lamp base from scratching the desk? ?

I don't know what used to be there before but it's not a solid metal base so a felt pad would weakly connect to the tiny bit of metal along the edges and not last long.

I've thought that a six inch by six inch mat would work well but couldn't find any.  There are large mats like door mats but they're too big and not comfortably cut to yield a smaller mat.

I suppose cork might be nice if there's somewhere selling cork that's comfortably thick and the right size.

    If you visit the kitchen section in a department store, you will find all different types and sizes of mats that you can use

    I would use a mouse pad. They are about 7 or 8 inches square and fairly tough.

    Something like linoleum or tile (or even the felt) ON THE DESK. Buy something and cut to size. {Cardboard is cheap - lol.}

    Get thin cork, it’s available as cork shelf paper, and cut a cork mat that exactly covers the bottom and set the lamp on it
