    Handheld is an adjective. It describes an object. I have a handheld hairdryer. That is a handheld metal detector.

    In 'His hand held the doorknob', held is a verb.

    Handheld refers to a portable machine that can be held in your hands. A Nintendo DS or 3DS is a handheld. An iPhone is also a handheld. 

    A hand held is part of a sentence. A hand held the puppy means a hand is holding a puppy.
