Why does dog gas smell so bad?
Not trolling, genuinely curious. Why does it smell so much worse when a dog passes gas than when a human does? Do their shorter digestive systems just build up more methane or something?

I guess I have never had a dog that passed nasty gas. I feed them right so there shouldn't be any farting.

Obviously, you're keeping your face too far away, when you huff. The gasses should go directly into your lungs, not be smelled first. See? Then you get high. And be sure and pet Fido and thank him. *burp* (Okay, I'm just talking shlt. ..he he. Get it? :D
Source(s): SERIOUS ANSWER: Is this a puppy? With humans, the digestive system isnt fully formed until age 2 or so. Cats also stink terribly when young. So I would imagine dogs must be like that too. If so, he'll stop smelling extra awful after a year. ... HOWEVER, if he isn't a puppy, maybe look for some advice about what you're feeding him. I know for cats, there's a Cat Site (its actually called that) and the advice available there by Q&A is VERY good. I'd try googling a dog site. Ask about feeding them. MY cat almost died because he wasnt getting enough water, and I didn't know, I felt awful. So I'm a big believer in asking for expert advice at such a place (especially since vets are so terribly expensive). preventive medicine, you know. ...Oh and there ARE vets who post in this category. They may not identify themselves as such, but..this isn't a bad place to seek advice. There are caring owners with experience here too. - 1 year ago
My dog's gas doesnt smell that bad except when I give him a soft boiled egg. Just like humans..the smell is probably determined based on its diet.

The methane is from SUGAR in the diet. Dogs are carnivores, yet most are fed a grain-based kibble which they have:
1) trouble digesting - it takes 12 hours to digest
2) grain digests INTO sugars which feed bad bacteria & thus you get nasty intestinal gas
YOUR SOLUTIONS:
Either feed the dog either a sweet potato based dog food (low glycemic factor) or go to an approved RAW diet, (btw, the dog can digest in 4 hours) & should have zero sugars.

Most of the smell comes from bacteria, they have a stronger stomach and different bacteria and stomach acids than we do, which gives them their own distinctive smell.

I would guess it's tinned dog food.
