It’s not about eating bats. Bats carry lots of viruses but never get ill themselves. When they pass viruses on to other bats sometimes the virus can mutate and it’s these mutations that allow viruses to spread to other species. The current thinking is that the virus passed from bats on to pangolins (small mammals) which were being stored close by at a “wet market” in Wuhan, China. Somehow, it looks like the virus has then been passed on to a human.
