in terms of anthropology, a tribe could lose as many as 1/3rd of its men and the next generation would likely be just as numerous as before they lost the men.  Not so with the loss of women.  This is the root of inequality ... women are more important to the future of the tribe than men.  Thus, men do the most dangerous tasks -- many of which were away from camp or village.  Women do the more local and safer tasks, since they are often burdened with small children who need care.  there is also physiology to consider ... the typical man is larger and stronger than the typical woman.
