Do the United States party names make sense?
As you know, there are two major parties in the United States of America: Republican and Democrat.
But do they make any sense? If the names were created more than 200 years ago by the mood of the time, why don't they change them now?
Aren't Democrats also Republicans? Do Democrats want Monarchy to be their nation's political system?
Aren't Republicans also Democrats? Do Republicans dislike Democracy?

Who cares? The real issue is whether a voting system that reduces the political spectrum to just two parties makes any sense

They weren't.
Both are less than 200 years old.
The Democratic party history is disputed. Some claim: it was established in the 1830s, others: a decade later. The name was not officially given until 1844.
The Republican party was named in 1854 (information easy to find). Formed that same year (earlier in the year).

Interesting point. I feel like the parties could switch at anytime in the next 40 years.

Both the Democratic Party and the Republican Party believe in liberal-democracy and the concept of a republic, so they're both 'democratic' and 'republican' in that sense. Though they originated as a split in the "Democratic-Republican Party". As I see it, there are four main trends in the Democratic and Republican parties and they should be split as such:
- The Center Party (think moderate Democrats and Moderate republicans)
- The Conservative Party (the more conservative section of the Republican Party)
- The Libertarian Party (fiscally conservative, socially progressive or neutral)
- The Social-Liberal Party (think progressives like Sanders, AOC, etc.)

I don't think it matters. Would you rather they went back Federalists and Whigs, or maybe to really confuse things Democratic Republicans? Republicans removed the Democratic part because they are not in favor of democracy.

The Republican party started right before the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican. The Democratic party is over 200 years old but the Republican party is not. The Republican party is for weaker government especially Federal government. Democrats are for stronger government. The USA is a Democratic Republic it is not a Democracy. A Republic is not a Monarchy. You are confused beyond belief. I suggest studying US history.

The original name of the Democratic Party was the Democratic-Republican Party. The modern Republican Party was formed in 1854.
The party names are fine. The party names don't negate either concept.
Instead of focusing on names, focus on what the parties stand for and advocate. That said, I honestly don't know what the Republican Party stands for. That party just seems to be anti progress.

The party names make absolutely no sense today.
But how often do political parties change their names anywhere in the world? Americans sort of understand each party stands for and changing the names of the parties would just confuse people...
