The Black Hills were sacred to the Lakota and were originally part of the Great Sioux Reservation created by the Fort Laramie Treaty in 1868, but land was confiscated in 1871 when Gold was discovered.
The carving was constructed 1927-41, to create tourism, and commemorate victory over the Sioux, and has always been opposed by the Lakota.
I hate the destruction of art. But I think that local people should decide whether a given statue or monument is appropriate, so if the Lakota want it dynamited, I think we should strongly consider it. But I don't think the Custer statue in Monroe Michigan should be taken down unless the residents of Monroe want that.
