Is worshiping God actually meaningful?
In the monotheistic worldview, our lives are imbued with meaning by virtue of having been created for a specific purpose by God. Thus, a common criticism of atheists from monotheists is that a universe that exists arbitrarily, where humans emerged from natural processes rather than deliberate creation, cannot possibly have meaning.
When I cook a meal, the meal could correctly say its creator (me) brought it into being for a specific purpose (to be eaten and digested). It could thus rightly claim that it has an objectively meaningful existence in its ability to nourish and bring pleasure to its creator. However, I doubt most humans would be satisfied to know their existence was only as meaningful as my meal's.
But is it any more meaningful to have been brought into existence by God for the purpose of worshiping him? Do our lives only have value in the context of a hierarchical relationship where he is superior and holds power over us? Would our existence be less meaningful if God had created us as equals, as his companions and friends, to share power with and make creative decisions democratically?
If meaning can only come from being created for a purpose, shouldn't God himself (who was never created and exists arbitrarily) be concerned that *his* existence is meaningless? Or if an uncreated intelligent being can create meaning for itself, why can't humans in an atheistic universe simply create our own meaning in just the same way?
@Nicole: I like your answer the best of anyone's so far. I also see meaning and value in living a moral life. But what makes that meaningful? Does it need God to be meaningful?

It is practical for all things to serve their appointed purpose, but we have free will that we may get as creative as we like with how and when that is done. Also, if you consider reincarnation, free will allows us to have any experience we want along with their subsequent consequences. We can put off our purpose for as long as we can enjoy the worthwhile yet ultimately incomplete satisfaction of living out various desires (from base to noble).
Our existence is equal in value to God's own, seeing as that we are Him. Consider the life energy of the body that leaves it after death. The life energy permeates several forms of life, such as cells and nerves, but while one may "die" without the body itself dying, we know that energy is neither created nor destroyed. It just changes form. We are like that. Spirits that can inhabit one form or another and remain eternal as our forms fade into ether.
I believe in the value of this experience. Of life as we know it. I believe it was intended to be exactly what it is. That there is no flaw in It's design. That while it may not be the end all be all of experience, it was a worthwhile and desired pursuit of whomever designed it. I believe our spirits chose to come here and experience it. I can't say for sure what the ultimate purpose is. But I believe that it is beautiful nonetheless. Meant to be lived, meant to be celebrated, meant to be enjoyed.
I don't like semantics so feel free to interpret differently. I myself don't even rigidly assert the following way of explaining things. But I do think there is as much a difference between meaning and value as there is in love and attachment. For instance, two different words interpreted to have the same meaning is why I don't like to get into semantics. I think both interpretations are fine as the importance lies in what is being conveyed. Just like I don't care what language you preach love in. Love is still the subject. But I think the value of life is measureless regardless of the type, whereas meaning is determined, as with words, by the user. To some a hammer is a tool for creating, to others, a weapon for destroying. It may have been intended for a purpose, but what it means to the victim of a hammer wielding murderer is different from what it means to someone getting house repairs after a natural disaster or a kid getting a treehouse built.
Our lives mean what we will them to but our purpose remains to be fulfilled so long as we choose to ignore or neglect it. God is not dictating our lives, but rather observing. Allowing us to do what we will, and assisting us in fulfilling our purpose. A better way to put it is that God serves our soul's evolution, not our ego's desires. That is His purpose. But I don't think our egos or the desires that spring from them mean the same thing to God as they do to man. I'm positive God remains undisturbed by our choices in life. While at the same time, ready to give anything we are ready to accept from Him at any moment.

Why does there need to be a great meaning or purpose?
Custodian of the planet and progression of humanity
About your meal analogy, "To Serve Man"
As a Free Thinking Atheist who is open to proof in several supernatural domains, but rejects the concept of deity to worship and rejects organized religion,
Why would a timeless omnipotent omniscient entity need to be worshipped?
It seems narcissistic and vain.
Was death an early invention of an entity that has no death?

Very insightful questions, you've obviously put a lot of thought into this. If someone were to believe that this was their primary purpose, it would seem pretty meaningless.
This of course only applies to people or religions who think that their primary purpose is to worship God. Not everybody considers this their purpose, but rather to live a moral life and pass God's tests so that they are worthy of entry to heaven. Worship is just one aspect of their faith.
There are various philosophical viewpoints on what brings meaning, including the nihilistic view that there is no meaning at all. I think that doing good is meaningful if it feels meaningful to the person who is doing it. Doing good because you feel pressured into it in any way does not seem as meaningful to me as following what your own internal compass is telling you. I don't think God is necessary to live a meaningful life.
I think happiness brings meaning, and life is meant to be enjoyed. There has been a lot of research recently on what makes people happy. These things include 1. Feeling like you make a positive difference and charitable acts. 2. A sense of community and belonging. 3. Feelings of gratitude toward your life and the people in it. 4. A sense of purpose. 5. Performing activities that you are skilled at and feeling challenged.
Things like making money, focusing only on self-interests, acquiring possessions, and obsession with physical appearance do not seem to have much influence on increasing happiness, and can actually have a negative impact.

"Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made" (Isaiah 43:7)!
“I, the LORD, have called you and given you (((POWER))) [Received after Holy Spirit baptism; Acts 1:5; 8]
to see that justice is done on earth.(((THROUGH YOU))) I will make a covenant with all peoples; (((THROUGH YOU))) I will bring light to the nations. You will open the eyes of the blind and set free those who sit in dark prisons" (Isaiah 42:6-7; GNT)!
1 "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
2To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the DAY OF VENGEANCE of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
3To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.
4And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.
5And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien shall be your plowmen and your vinedressers.
6But ye shall be named the Priests of the LORD: men shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves.
7For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.
8For I the LORD love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.
9And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the LORD hath blessed.
10I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels.
11For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations" (Isaiah Chapter 61)!

You've a barrage of questions here. I'll address the leading one.
God will surely exist as he is, even if no one worships him. He has no unmet needs. See...
Acts 17:24-25 KJV — God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is he worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things.
Psalm 50:12 — And If I were ever hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof.
That stated, he rewards those who find him worthy of worship.
John 4:23 KJV — But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.
He leaves it up to individuals to decide.

Being delusional is not meaningful.

As meaningful as any pretense.
It isn't real in any way, so it amounts to entertainment...if such pretense entertains you.
I prefer more adult pursuits.
