Is a $1,500 fee for a Criminal Defense Lawyer to attempt an "early intervention" with the DA worth it? ?
I have been charged with two misdemeanors (calling the police to harass or annoy and resisting arrest) but I also have been also dealing with a mental disorder of paranoid schizophrenia for a year and a half. I am not sure of what to do. My best guess as of now is to do my best to qualify for a public defender see if they can negotiate the charges down accept a plea bargain and then beg for the mercy/ leniency of the judge.

You have the money..talk to an attorney who knows the laws in your state. Your mental history has no bearing on your case.

Are you that stupid that you think you can deliberately qualify for a public defender by withdrawing money from your accounts, to look poor, or spending the money to look poor? It won't work. They will scrutinize how you spent it and where you spent it. Perhaps, not immediately but over several days, they will get around to it. Spend the money or represent yourself and if you decide to represent yourself, paranoid schiz is not an excuse and either is any mental disorder, unless you are complete mental case and need to be institutionalized, which they WILL do if you claim insanity and are found to be insane. You are more likely to be dealt with fairly if you admit that you are an arrogant jerk with violent tendencies, and you generally do what you want when you want.

Once you get your lawyer, keep your mouth shut in court except to say Yes Your Honor. You are paying them to talk for you.
