When recording digital audio "in the box" does internal or external processing make a difference?
For instance, there are many pro-audio manufacturers that sell some kind of external DSP processor to crunch the numbers, "relieving stress" on the computers' CPU when running lots of plug ins. What about just building a computer with the processing power to make the process seamless. Like Dual Intel Xeon 12-core processors with hyper-threading that presents the OS with 48 cores? Wouldn't that negate the need for some kind of outboard processor?

if you have that kind of money, an external box is cheaper.
plus, if you have Windows 10, you have no control over certain processes it does in the background, so really you want a fast computer AND an external box. especially since the ex-box is not subject to the whims of your OS, and it won't let the OS steal the processing power at all, leaving all the processor for your audio processing.
besides, not all audio software supports multiple cores ;)
